How parents can support children during exam preparation

Explore practical ways to discuss exam results, support your child’s responsibility and create a manageable study environment at home.

Make time to listen first

Parents who want to help can find that most conversations start revolving around study and scores. Ask how your child’s day went, not only how much work they completed. Listening before offering advice creates room to understand the actual need.

Instead of “Why was your result low again?” try “Which part of this exam felt most difficult?” If they are not ready to discuss it, agree on a better time rather than questioning the result immediately.

Discuss the next step

After a practice exam, choose one or two specific points rather than evaluating the entire year. Did time run out, or was one topic difficult? Asking “What would you like to try for this?” gives the student room to make their own assessment.

The Ministry of National Education school resource on exam analysis also highlights the parent’s supportive role. Try discussing your child’s previous work and current needs instead of comparing their results with other students.

Agree on responsibilities

Rather than checking every item on the plan, discuss where parental help is useful. Providing resources or a calm place to work are tasks a family can take on. Leave room for the student to explain their daily work and ask for help when needed.

A short weekly check-in can replace repeated questions about studying throughout the day. If a coach or teacher is involved, learn how updates will be shared. Avoid requiring the student to follow several conflicting study plans at once.

Build a workable home routine together

Consider television, visitors and shared spaces alongside study hours. Agree on practical arrangements that also recognise other family responsibilities. If complete quiet is not always possible, explore alternative study times together.

Keep room for conversations and activities unrelated to exams. Interpreting everything your child does through exam preparation can narrow the relationship. You can discuss difficulties with the school guidance service and explore family resources on the Ministry’s Velivizyon platform.

Coordinate with the coach or teacher

Instead of trying to solve every issue in one meeting, share a concrete observation such as “They struggle to begin the evening part of the plan.” Include the student’s perspective. Agreeing on who will take the next step can help prevent advice from different adults becoming confusing.
