How to analyze a practice exam

How to analyze a practice exam

Review practice exam results by topic, error type and time use, then turn incorrect and unanswered questions into specific tasks for your next study week.

Move beyond the overall result

Practice exam analysis means deciding what to do after counting correct and incorrect answers. A school guidance resource published within Turkey’s Ministry of National Education also recommends distinguishing error causes and planning work around topic gaps. Treat the result as a record to examine rather than a verdict.

First record correct, incorrect and unanswered questions by subject, alongside approximate time spent. Exams may differ in difficulty. Rather than drawing a major conclusion from one lower result, look for recurring patterns across several exams taken under similar conditions.

Different mistakes need different responses

Revisit incorrect and unanswered questions. Was the topic unfamiliar, did you struggle to apply the information, was there a calculation error, or did time run out? Record more than one cause when necessary. Labelling every error “carelessness” can leave the explanation incomplete.

Also mark questions you answered correctly by guessing. Choosing the right option after being unsure does not necessarily show that the topic is secure. Check whether you can explain the solution in your own words.

Create a simple review record

A notebook can contain the subject and question number, topic, error cause, next task and review date. For example: “Maths 12 — ratios — could not establish the relationship — review basic examples, try new questions — check Friday.” This turns an observation into a clear action.

If timing was difficult, identify where time went rather than simply aiming to be faster. Trouble understanding the first reading, long calculations and repeatedly returning to one question are different issues. Testing one strategy change in the next exam can make its effect easier to interpret.

Connect the review to your plan

Start with a few gaps that recur often or affect later learning. For each one, schedule topic work, fresh questions and a later check. Practise the method on a similar but new question rather than memorising the original solution.

Open your previous notes at the next review. Which errors have reduced, and which persist? A reduction in one error type can inform your next decision even when the total score is unchanged. For persistent difficulties, ask a teacher to listen to your solution method and offer feedback.

Ask for help at the point you get stuck

When taking a question to your teacher, show the method you tried and the step that stopped you. Saying “I could not choose which information to use here” makes your request clearer. After the explanation, try a similar question independently to check whether you can apply the method.
